Tom’s post card to Ethel

This was a card Tom sent to Ethel. Not much on the reverse side, just “To Ethel with love from Tom” and dated it 8/3/18. A lot of items like this were produced for the armed forces. Read about the origins of “Blighty” here.

  1. Hi Peter:

I noticed the Egyptian Sphinx at the bottom right hand corner. Was this post card made for soldiers stationed in Egypt?

Hi, Omar. I assume so, as he was supposed to have gone to Egypt for the campaign in Palestine. Cairo was the British headquarters.

You have done a good job in keeping all of these pieces of family history.

It was my mum, not me, Don. It will take me a while to wade through it all. I am afraid stuff will be lost eventually; that’s what makes the Internet such a great way to store it.

Don’t assume that everything you have written is safe from loss. Hard drives crash at web hosts also. You may want to export your site to your home PC once in a while as backup.

Thanks, Don. I shall have to consider the best option.
