Praying for the end of the rainy season

Photo that appeared in La Nación

If I didn’t enjoy the relatively cold weather in London over the past couple of months, I was a lot better off than many people in the region where I live. This year the rainy season, which runs from May to October/November, has been exceptionally wet. As I write, quite a few people are trying to rescue their belongings from flooded homes just over the border in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is very mountainous and the heavy rains swell the many rivers that run down to both coasts until they burst their banks.

It is not safe to live along the riverbanks, of course, but the poor have nowhere else to go. It has been raining for most of the past 48 hours and that can only mean one thing: flooding.
