Salute to two very brave men

I have mentioned before what an important year 1968 was. But if a lot was lost, there were also memorable moments that ultimately proved very positive. Tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of the famous Black Power salute at the Olympic Games in Mexico City. It is hard to convey today the shock caused worldwide by the black-fisted salute. Tommie Smith and John Carlos (gold and bronze 200 meter medal winners) were reviled by many back home in the US but their gesture on the podium was a powerful – and very brave – statement.

Smith is in London at the moment and I read an interview with him in The Independent newspaper. You can read it here. Tommie also has his own website here.
