The kids in this photo are hoping to collect lumps of coal falling off the backs of lorries, during the General Strike of 1926 (in which Tom took part). The workers were defeated in the strike and their conditions worsened. The children look remarkably cheerful.
This photo was taken in 1933 in Shadwell, on the northern bank of The Thames. The pool no longer exists. The domed building in the background is the entrance shaft to Rotherhithe Tunnel (another one sits on the southern bank of the river, in Rotherhithe).
In this photo (taken in 1952), a busker is seen entertaining children in Covent Garden.
I find this photo, from 1950, extremely evocative; the the cobbled street, the clothing, the game of hopscotch itself.
